Some 11 traffic police officers from Nakuru were on Thursday morning arrested following an operation conducted by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption (EACC) sting team.
The operation conducted near Free Area, Kiti and Eveready roundabout followed a two-day surveillance conducted by the sting team where a motorist was also arrested in the operation.
EACC spokesman Yasin Amaro said that they had received many complains from motorists about harassment by Nakuru traffic police officers.
“The video clips that we have clearly show the officers faces and how they collect bribes with impunity. Officers at the Eveready roundabout are the most notorious because there is a speed camera stationed there,” said Amaro.
Those arrested had folded notes of Sh50 and Sh100 stashed in their pockets and caps.
It was noted that officers from the rank of corporal usually stick chewing gum on their swagger canes in order to pick dropped notes on the highway.
Interviewed drivers and conductors welcomed the move saying that it is a major breakthrough in the fight against corruption.
The officers will however be charged once their file is complete.
