Sergeant Alice Nasiae Yaile, a traffic police officer, was being accused of allegedly receiving a Sh3,000 bribe from Mr Mutisya Joseph Mulaki.

The court heard that the accused person received the bribe to release his driving licence and insurance sticker which she had confiscated after his vehicle, a Toyota probox, was involved in a non-injury road accident.

Mombasa principal magistrate Henry Nyakweba heard that the accused person committed the offence on May 17, 2018 at Makupa police station in Mombasa.

Investigations by the police revealed that the accused person had requested Mr Mulaki to give her Sh5,000 before she could release his documents but they settled on Sh3,000.

The accused person denied the charges before the court and filed an application to be released on bail pending the next case hearing.

Magistrate Nyakweba granted the request and directed that the accused person be released on a surety bond of Sh100,000 or cash bail of Sh30,000.

The case will be mentioned on June 11, 2018.

During the May 17 operation, EACC coast region boss George Ojowi said that more than ten driving licences, driving permits and a total of Sh29,000 were recovered.
