Safety panels recently installed on various city roads have drastically reduced accidents by 10 percent, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has said.
The installation works of the very first barriers in North Airport Road that were completed in June this year have drastically changed the profile of the 3km stretch which in 2013 was one of the riskiest roads in the country.
“The safety panels are wonderful. They are working as expected. There are no accidents that have been reported on North Airport Road since the barrier panels were erected,” said the NTSA Director General Francis Meja.
“Ten per cent cut in road fatalities is a very good indicator of the success of the barriers and so far, with the help of corporates, we have covered five kilometres of key high-risk roads,” Meja added.
With the establishment of the safety panels, jaywalkers have been compelled to use designated places for road crossing including footbridges erected along the busy roads hence the evident drop in fatalities.
