Hundreds of motorists plying the busy Maai Mahiu- Naivasha road were Tuesday morning stranded after a lorry heading to Maai Mahiu from Naivasha was involved in an accident causing a traffic snarl up on the single-lane road.
According to eye witnesses, the lorry lost control as the driver tried to overtake another lorry that was heading in the same direction.
“The driver was speeding and avoided hitting the other truck from the back. As he tried to overtake, he lost control of the vehicle which ended up dismantling the cabin and the trailer. The driver and one other occupant sustained some injuries but with the help of some motorists, they were rushed to the hospital,” an eye witness who only identified himself as Waihenya, narrated.
A section of the road remained inaccessible forcing other motorists to look for alternative routes for the better part of the day.
Another eye witness linked the accident with a mechanical hitch on the black spot notorious for accidents.
“The truck seemed to swerve as the driver speedily tried to overtake another lorry. He tried to control the vehicle from landing in a ditch but the heavy trailer broke the axles almost overturning over the other. We managed to rescue the two occupants but we are still waiting for the police to clear the road,” Clement Muchai, said.
By the time of going to press, the road had not been cleared thereby inconveniencing motorists using the busy highway.
