A 12 year-old school girl from Bondeni area in Nakuru County drowned in River Njoro where she had gone in company of others to fetch water.
Njoro police boss Patrick Lai, said the Ndarugu Primary School standard seven pupil, had drowned while trying to cross the river.
He said other girls told villagers and victim’s parents that the deceased was trying to cross the river to venture into a fruit plantation on the other side of the river, but she slipped over a soft rock and was consequently swept away.
“She was trying to cross the river to pick oranges at a farm across the river, but unfortunately she slipped on a soft rock and drowned. She died after being hit by sharp rocks and logs in the river but her body was retrieved from the river after other locals noticed it about a kilometre from the scene of the accident,” said the police boss.
He added that the flooded river, which allegedly claims many lives during rainy seasons, also claimed the life of a local plumber sometime last month.
The body of the deceased was taken to Egerton University Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem.
