Tragedy befell Mundulusia village in Mundika, Matayos Sub-county after a man died when the unused toilet slab that was undergoing renovation caved in.
The body of Kennedy Okwero was retrieved seven hours after the incident following a combined effort of residents, the police and Busia County Government Disaster Management team led by Joseph Osere.
Area assistant chief Stephen Oundo said the deceased was trying to rectify the defective slab when it caved in before pushing him 25m below and landing on him on Wednesday.
The chief blamed the contractor for laying a poor foundation.Okwero's mother Wilimina Awuor said she learned of the death of her son while on her way from school.
"I couldn't believe the news when my neighbour called me. My son who was the third born in the family was a hardworking young man who did his best at his Jua Kali job to earn a living," she told the Busia County Governor's Press Service.
The owner said the toilet developed cracks on Monday which made him to hire the services of three young men including the deceased.
The body was moved to Busia County Referral Funeral Home.
