Addressing reporters at Naivasha town on Friday, Naivasha sub-county medical director Dr Oren Ombiro said most victims of road accidents die because they lack proper first aid.

He added that training officers on first aid operation will drastically reduce the number of victims who succumb to death and sustain severe injuries.

“I want to ask the government to train traffic police officers on first aid and other rescue procedures,” he said.

The medical director also said that police are often the first people to arrive at accident scenes and the knowledge will be of much help.

At the same time, the director said that the government has put in place adequate measures to ensure Naivasha residents have access to quality medical care.

He said the county government has put aside enough money to buy medicine and medical equipment for all hospitals and dispensaries in Naivasha sub-county.

Meanwhile, the official indicated that the number of women delivering in public hospitals in the sub-county has increased.

He said that the rise has been attributed to the government waived on maternal services early last year.

“The number of pregnant women seeking services at public hospitals has increased since the introduction of free maternal services,” he said.

He also added that access to maternal services has seen reduction in birth complications often experienced by pregnant women during child birth.

Ombiro, however, observed that some women are reluctant to seek maternal services as a result of religious beliefs. He said that some communities hold strong religious beliefs that prevent them from seeking medical care.
