The 100 Cuban doctors' induction programme on Monday kicked-off at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi.

The two-weeks programme is designed to ensure that the foreign doctors are comprehensively introduced to the Kenyan health system, and the Kenyan heritage to adequately prepare them to deliver on their mandate without any difficulties. 

Speaking during the official opening of the induction programme, Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki, disclosed that the government had increased its domestic financing towards health sector reforms which have enhanced provision of affordable and equitable access to essential health services for the entire population. 

Representing the CS, Dr. Rashid Aman, the Chief Administrative Secretary in the Ministry of Health said: "the government has registered key achievements in health care financing and social health protection including, elimination of user fees at primary healthcare level to increase access to essential services and implementation of free maternity programme in public health facilities to improve the maternal and child health across the country." 

Following the achievements, Kariuki said the number of deliveries in the public health facilities have doubled from 600,000 to 1.2 million annually.

On his part, Principal Secretary for Health Eng. Peter Tum said that the government would give the doctors necessary support to ensure they discharge their duties effectively in various stations they will be posted.

Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale and Taita Taveta are among counties that will receive at least two Cuban doctors.
