Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Abdi Hassan now says incidences of transformer thefts that have been rampart in some parts of the county have declined.

This is due to what Hassan said was the formation of a special police unit to to deal with those behind the criminal acts.

Speaking in Eldoret on Sunday, Hassan said the unit managed to dismantle criminal gangs that were targeting the transformers and take advantage of lack of power to attack locals.

"Those incidences of transformer theft have drastically declined thanks to the good work of a unit set up specifically do deal with those involved," noted Hassan.

"The unit will however remain in place and keep patrolling identified areas to ensure no further incidences are reported," he added.

During Madaraka Day celebrations, the County Commissioner announced the setting up of the unit following increased transformer thefts in several residential areas in the outskirts of Eldoret among them Illula, Kapseret, Annex and Subaru.
