Transport has been cut off in Mavoko sub-county after a bridge was swept away by waters on Wednesday night.
A spot check by this writer confirmed that the Athi River's stage 39 bridge is impassable because it has been completely swept away, members of the public who used it are apparently stranded.
The bridge connected Athi River town and Mombasa Road through Athi River's Kwa Mang'eli Slum.
Catherine Wanjala, a resident of the slum who spoke to this writer on Thursday said the bridge was usable two days ago before it was swept away.
She said the area where the bridge was very dangerous and therefore the residents had condoned the place for their own safety and those of their livestock.
Stephene Ombima, a boda boda operator in the area said the situation had made it expensive to commute from the slum to Mombasa Road.
Ombima said it had forced them to charge their client's Sh150 instead of the usual Sh50 since they had to go round to Devki stage for them to access Mombasa Road, he termed it hectic and time-consuming operating in mud.
Caroline Muema on her part said her operations had been paralyzed arguing she could not afford transporting her kales from the Slum to Everest Park apartments along Mombasa Road.
They, however, blamed the government for failing to renovate the bridge that was constructed in 1939 even after showing cracks, signs of being weak.
The locals called on the state's intervention once the current rains being experienced in the region goes down.
