Traffic was paralysed for hours on the busy Nairobi – Mombasa highway Saturday afternoon after heavy flooding at Sultan Hamud.
This came after a river burst its banks as a result of heavy rains that continue to be experienced in the country.
The road became impassable, prompting Makueni County officials to advise motorists to use the Machakos–Wote–Makindu road to get rid of the traffic snarl-up stretching over kilometers.
According to Coast Traffic commandant Emmanuel Okanda, matatus from Nairobi had spent hours on the road, a delay that caused a massive transport crisis on the busy highway.
“We anticipate major traffic snarl up along the highway due to the heavy flooding and breakdown of a lorry at Salama area in Voi,” said Okanda.
Flooding has been experienced in various parts of the country due to the heavy rains, leading to damage of property and public infrastructure.
