Residents in Machakos Bus station has been paralyzed with passengers stranded at the bus stop upto late Sunday night due to lack of passenger vehicles.
The situation comes as a result of suspension of more than 200 buses under UMOWA Sacco ltd since Thursday last week after a fatal accident along the Masii-Tawa road that left two dead.
The accident is said to have occurred as a result of overloading and over speeding by the driver.
Speaking while addressing the press and the stranded passengers on Monday morning at the Machakos Bus station in Machakos town, Steve Mutuku, the Sacco chairman stated that the Sacco had already fulfilled more than half of the requirements so as to resume normal transport.
“For the last three days we have not been on the road following the accident involving one of our vehicles in Tawa. We have prepared 80% of the requirements of NTSA,” said Mutuku
The National Transport Security Authority has revoked UMOWA Sacco license until further notice.
However the vehicle owners have complained that the move is putting their businesses at risk as some have purchased the vehicles using a loan that is paid monthly.
However the National Transport and Security Authority (NTSA) law remains that if a vehicle causes an accident due to breaking road safety rules, the whole of the flit of vehicles from the particular are suspended for a period of time as a punishment until they fulfill certain requirements by the body.
UMOWA is the largest sacco in Machakos County
