Key players in the motor vehicle industry have been called upon to conform and adhere to the right standards and rules set for road safety.

Speaking in Eldoret on Wednesday Charles Ongwae the KeBs Managing Director said that road accidents are ranked 9th in causing of deaths in the world and the ranking is projected to rise to third by 2020 if the standards are not adhered to.

“In Kenya, over three thousand people die through road accidents every year, most of them between the ages of 15 and 44 years. These are lives being lost It is our role to offer a solution,” he said.

Ongwae also noted that KEBS has worked closely with key stakeholders in the transport industry to develop standards to ensure protection of the end road users.

“The roads are at the heart of our social and economic development. With this in mind, we must ensure we protect the end users,” he added.

He noted that all road speed limiters system should be checked for accuracy and functionality at least yearly.

Ongwae was speaking at a forum organized by the Kenya Bureau of Standards, National Transport and Safety Authority and sponsored by Trademark East Africa aimed at sensitizing and educating key players in the motor vehicle industry on road safety rules with the aim of reducing road carnage.

KEBS intends to hold 28 such forums across the country.

As part of their mandate to provide standardization solutions for sustainable development, KEBS has developed over 7900 standards.
