All residents in Mandera County have been cautioned against using certain roads due to increased threats of attack by Al-Shabaab.

Mandera County Commissioner Fredrick Shisia said Al-Shabaab militants have increased their movements in the area and it’s not safe for the residents to use certain routes which do not have security.

Mr. Shisia warned that the government cannot guarantee security to travelers using the Elwak route saying they have not replaced police vehicles which were burnt last week.

Vehicles using different routes are provided with armed police escort following recent attacks by Al-Shabaab in the region.

“We have advised most road users to use the Mandera-Takaba-Moyale route because we cannot guarantee use of the Elwak route since we have not replaced two police vehicles burnt last week,” he said as quoted by the Daily Nation.

“This is a temporary measure but once the Inspector General releases two vehicles needed for bus escort then we shall resume normal business,” he added.

The county commissioner further said that security agents in Mandera County are on high alert following Intelligence reports.

“We have been monitoring the movement of Al-Shabaab and the kind of information we received over the weekend was not very good and we decided to step up our level of alertness,” he said.
