Travellers along the Nakuru Eldoret highway were for the better part of the weekend left stranded after police impounded vehicles flouting traffic rules on the busy road.
Traffic police officers and the National Road and Safety Authority (NTSA) intensified the crackdown on public service vehicles following the recent spate of accidents that have caused a number of deaths.
The exercise is aimed at reducing road carnage on the highway where close to ten people have perished in the past week after a number of accidents.
Molo police commander Richard Masinde said officers were patrolling the highway, especially on the Kibunja, Sachag’wan and Salgaa slopes to make sure drivers adhere to traffic rules. He cautioned trailer drivers to stop the habit of freewheeling to avoid ramming other motorists as experienced in most of the accidents along the highway.
The NTSA has also erected bumps and road signs with some of the signs having been stolen and sold as scrap metal by unknown suspects.
Vehicles whose number plates were removed and those that were seized are required to undergo an inspection before the plates can be given back.
