A Tanzanian long-distance driver is under critical but stable condition after their vehicle was raided by an anonymous gang along the Kisii-Migori road near Gesonso township on Monday night.
The driver, Stephen Ngoyani, suffered head injuries while his core-driver managed to escape narrowly as the raiders allegedly took an estimated Sh250,000 that the two men had.
According to eye witnesses, trouble began when three masked men alighted from a Probox and ordered the two, who were reportedly resting by the roadside, out of their vehicle. They decided to beat the driver, who hesitated to alight with his colleague vanishing.
“I saw around three people alighting from a Toyota Probox. They ordered the duo out of the vehicle and started beating the driver. They later drove off after picking something from the vehicle,” said Alloys Nyaberi, a witness.
The driver, who could not speak at the time, was identified as a Tanzanian national following scrutiny of his documents, but his colleague reported the incident at Kisii police station.
Kisii OCPD Tom Mutisya said his officers were investigating the incident but urged members of the public to give information that could lead to apprehension of the gang.
“The incident is under investigations and already the co-driver has revealed the amount of money and valuables they lost,” he said.
