A truck driver identified as John Nzuki who ran over former Kitui mayor Martha Mwangangi on Friday is set to be charged with causing death by careless driving on Monday, Kitui county commissioner Boaz Cherutich has said.
Speaking on Saturday to the media, Cherutich announced that Nzuki will be arraigned in court on Monday, saying the suspect is currently being held at Kitui police station and has since recorded a statement with the police.
"The suspect has already recorded statement and will spend the weekend in the police cells awaiting to arraigned on Monday," he said.
Cherutich further said that the police will conduct an in-depth investigation into the incident to establish the circumstances that led to the ex-mayor's death.
Formed Lands CS Charity Ngilu escaped death by a whisker during the accident that crushed Mwangangi to death. The two were leading demonstrations against the demolition of market stalls at Kalundu Market by the Kitui County government.
