Every 14th of February love takes centre stage with lovers exchanging romantic words or maybe rose flowers to appreciate their loved ones.

A times some choose to make it to the altar with words such as I (name), take you (name), to be my lawfully wedded (wife/husband), to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.

The above words are easy to say when both of you are in good health and shape, but a times life becomes difficult especially when one lover is on the hospital bed. This is a time when true love commitment and devotion are tested.

Such is the situation facing young couple David Wachira Muriithi and Teresiah Wangari in Ng'ondu Village of Njoro Sub County after Wachira developed a spinal cord complication in 2014 barely 5 years into their marriage.

He underwent a spinal cord operation and had it fixed with plates and 9 screws to align it after removing the growth in a 9-hour surgery.

“The situation worsened after the surgery as I became paralyzed from the waist downwards,” he said.

Wachira, who was the sole breadwinner for the family, became immobile and left the burden of providing for the family to his wife Teresia Wangari.

He further developed another problem where he cannot fold his knees and waist as they are stiff and rigid after a complication called paraplegia.

He now needs Sh6 million for treatment in India.

However, despite all these challenges, his wife Teresiah Wangari has stood firmly behind her husband despite the ailing. When we meet her at their home in Ng'ondu village of Njoro, Wangari says she has to do everything for her husband as he cannot do anything on his own.

“He has to be assisted in everything from feeding, washing, and changing his diapers,” Wangari said.

Wangari says she is reminded of the vows she took on her wedding day to love in sickness and in health. The couple has two children firstborn in primary and last born in nursery and Wangari says she has to struggle even though not easy to ensure life goes on for the kids despite the sickness challenge.

Despite admitting that life has been not such rosy since her husband was paralyzed she has hopes that if well-wishers can team up to ensure that her husband gets well by contributing towards the Kshs.6 million then all can be well for their love and marriage.

“I believe my husband will be well if he undergoes that surgery. My appeal is just to well-wishers to kindly assist so that we can get the Sh6 million for surgery in India,” she says.

Area Nominated MCA Susan Njuguna who is also the chair Nakuru County assembly women caucus says they have been trying to assist the family in some expenses such as buying diapers and paying the electricity bill.

She, however, calls on well-wishers to step in and ensure that Sh6 million is raised so that Wachira who was the sole breadwinner can go for the surgery in India and rectify the situation.

Those who wish to assist the family can send their contribution through Paybill number 522471 a/c David Wachira or KCB Bank Egerton Branch 11199111117 or reach on Wachira on 0720 759679.
