Elected Jubilee Members of Parliament have challenged their Nasa colleagues to make real their thrat of skipping the first parliamentary sitting that has been called by President Uhuru Kenyatta for Thursday this week.
The MP’s-elect from Central Kenya dismissed NASA's threat as unconstitutional, unreasonable, and overly unguided.
This comes after the Opposition MPs-elect said they would boycott the first parliament sitting on grounds that Mr Kenyatta is not a legally elected president and therefore he has to wait until the petition at the Supreme Court is heard and determined.
Led by Kieni MP-elect Kanini Kega at a press conference at Sarova Panafric Hotel in Nairobi, the Jubilee contingent accused NASA of spreading baseless claims to their supporters, yet their top brass know the truth.
“No one can be called an MP until they are sworn in and our colleagues in the opposition are aware of that,” he said.
He accused the NASA leaders of showing their ignorance of the Kenyan Constitution, and asked them to behave in accordance to the law.
“Our Constitution is very clear on the powers of the President. President Kenyatta acted within the law to make a gazette notice convening the first parliamentary sitting for the swearing-in of MPs,” Kega said.
“Even those in Nasa who are saying they will not show up during the swearing-in will be there, everyone knows that they cannot be called MPs if they have not been sworn in,” he added.
