Teachers Service Commission CEO Nancy Macharia on Thursday appeared before the Nakuru High Court over allegations that retired teachers had not been paid their salary arrears and pension for more than 15 years even after being instructed by court to pay them.

In her defense, Ms Macharia said that they had formed a committee which consisted of members from TSC, Director of Pensions, Treasury and the Attorney General, with the aim of handling the issue of disbursement of the monies to retired teachers.

She also stated that the government had set aside Sh1.5 Million in its 2016/2017 budget so as to pay the concerned teachers.

However, Lawyer Dominic Kimata representing the aggrieved teachers argued that Macharia ought to be jailed over what he said was contempt of court after an earlier court ruling ordering that the teachers be paid.

The plaintiff's lawyer also asked the court to ensure that the monies were disbursed quickly as more than 1000 retired teachers involved in the case had already died, adding that this delay could see more fail to benefit from the funds.

Lady Justice Maureen Odero is expected to give a ruling on the matter on June 24, 2016.
