Knut Kangundo Sub-County branch Secretary General Daniel Nginga has faulted the government for firing the 70,000 teachers who were hired on contract during last year's teacher’s strike.
Nginga said the teachers would have been instrumental in sorting the issue of shortage of teachers in public schools and asked the government to reconsider their decision.
Speaking in Kangundo Town on Wednesday, Nginga noted that the government should have absorbed the teachers instead of terminating their contracts, in a bid to improve the quality of education in public schools in the country.
“Many schools are faced with the challenge of shortage of teachers while the government is busy firing others. It would have been better if the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) had employed them on a permanent and pensionable basis,” said Nginga.
He said that he was sure the government can afford to accommodate the teachers on a pensionable and permanent basis, and save the country from the crisis.
The teachers had been hired on a three-month contract, which was expected to expire in February, 2015.
