In bid to enhance the safety of learners in learning institutions, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has released new guidelines.
In a circular to head teachers in primary and secondary schools, the commission’s chief executive Nancy Macharia, cautioned teachers against canning students or even keeping canes in classrooms, staff rooms or in other place of the school.
“Under no circumstances should corporal punishment or use of physical force to inflict pain be administered to learners,” reads part of the circular.
The schools heads are required to protect learners against any form of sexual harassment by reporting incidences to police or any other safety agencies.
“Cases of sexual abuse, whether within or outside the school, should thoroughly be investigated, documented and action taken within expediency,” says the circular.
Bullying by either prefects or other students will also not be entertained in learning institutions.
“Any form of bullying, including physical, verbal or psychological abuse, should be eradicated in the leaning institutions,” noted Macharia in the communication.
She further stated that Guidance and counseling sessions should be encouraged in order to sensitise learners, parents and guardians on the dangers of drug and substance abuse.
School administrators have also been warned against forcing learners to repeat against their wish.
“Forced repetition is prohibited under Section 35of the Basic Education Act. All learners should be assisted to transit to the next class and complete any given segment in the learning cycle.”
Teachers have also been urged to ensure students report and leave school within the set time.
