The Teacher’s Service Commission (TSC) has revealed its plan of hiring, promoting teachers and releasing pension money for the retired teachers.
In the plan, 60,000 teachers are set to benefit. The commission asked the national treasury to allocate it with sh6.8 billion as part of the supplementary budget.
Speaking on Wednesday, the chairperson of House Education Committee, Sabina Chege said that her team had pushed for the money for teacher’s promotions.
TSC said that sh2 billion has been allocated for recruitment of 5,000 teachers for ten months. The commission will have another sh2 billion to be used for the promotion of teachers. Another sh1.5 billion will be spent on the pension of retired teachers.
The secretary general of Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Akelo Misori said many teachers, approximately 60,000, were due for promotions. He said that thousands of teachers under job group L and M have not been promoted for quite a long period of time. He revealed that teachers between job groups L can automatically be promoted unlike those in job group M who will have to be interviewed before being promoted.
Last year, teachers held a countrywide strike demanding for a pay hike. This affected the final examinations for both primary and secondary schools.
