The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been urged to promote teachers who have attained higher qualification but have stagnated in the same job group for long.

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Chepkoilel branch executive secretary Sammy Bor said it is sad that despite teachers investing a lot of education for the benefit of learners, TSC has looked down upon them.

“TSC should unconditionally promote those teachers as witnessed in other sectors where civil servants are paid a lot of money after attaining higher promotion leaving teachers to languish in poverty. This is uncalled for and may affect teachers morale,” noted Bor in Eldoret town, Saturday.

He said that teachers should also be recognized for nation building as they do a lot to teach students.

"The affected teachers have invested a lot of money to acquire higher grade so they deserve promotions,” added the Chepkoilel KNUT official.

Bor regretted that most teachers took loans to further their education with the majority of them having undergraduate and Master’s degree but up to now the employer is yet to recognize their efforts through a promotion.

He noted that teachers presented their certificates to TSC and sadly what they were given is only acknowledgment letters saying "teachers don’t need the letters but pay slips to repay their loans."
