The residents led by Mombasa politician Mohamed Tenge, said they will not allow the county government to demolish the structures of the residents to pave way for new housing units.

The residents expressed concern over the proposal by the county government to remove informal settlements which they said were providing housing to thousands of slum residents.

Ms Tenge said the proposed demolition of houses to build new high-rise buildings will render thousands of slum dwellers homeless.

She urged the county government to compensate the affected residents and assure them of being provided with alternative homes before the demolition starts.

“No one should be evicted until we resolve this issue. Where will the residents go after their houses are demolished?” asked Ms Tenge.

An activist who was present during the meeting, Mr Tsuma Mwangala, said many of the residents have been living in the areas earmarked for demolition for over 30 years.

“How can the county authorities think of evicting people without any form of compensation or relocation for the affected residents,” said Mr Mwangala.

Mombasa County government had launched a project to redevelop old estates in the county in a bid to resolve the housing shortage in the county.

The county government had said it will redevelop the estates to create an additional 30,000 housing units by 2035.
