Jubilee Party Secretary-General Raphael Tuju has termed the floods that have hit Kisumu's Nyando area as the worst to maroon the region since 1969.
Speaking in Kisumu on Monday, Tuju observed that the floods had caused intense suffering to the residents who have since lost property to the rains.
The Cabinet Secretary without portfolio also visited families who have since been rendered homeless by the floods.
Official reports indicate that at least 2,000 people have been displaced by the surging rains.
“From today, we have brought relief food to feed those who are displaced and the food will be available till the rains subside,” stated Tuju.
As a long-term measure of mitigating the floods, he said that it was necessary for the devolved units and the national government to work together in the construction of dams and dykes.
He also added that desilting of rivers in flood prone areas was another option that if well exploited will cushion the residents from future deaths, and loss of property occasioned by heavy rains.
Nyando MP Jared Okello pressed upon the government to move with speed and help in the reconstruction of the submerged schools before they re-open this week.
By the end of Monday, no official communication had been relyed concerning any deaths that might have been occasioned by the floods.
