A Tuk tuk taxi driver and his passenger died on the spot this morning after the taxi got involved in a head on collision with a lorry carrying building material. The accident that took place near Shell Petrol Station at the junction of Nakuru-Nairobi and Nakuru-Nyahuru highways at around 7am caused a heavy traffic jam on both of the highways as frantic efforts were made to contact traffic police. An eye witness Samuel Muturi a motorcycle taxi rider who operates at the junction told this writer at the scene that the lorry that was driving towards Nakuru town lost control and rammed into the tiny vehicle that was ferrying a passenger towards Whitehouse estate along the Nakuru-Nyahuru Highway while its driver and tan boy escaped with minor injuries. “It happened so fast and instantly that we could not figure out what had happened until we so the lorry blocking other vehicles along the highway. It had knocked down a tuk tuk and when we moved closer the driver and the passenger were already dead, ‘’said the eye witness. Nakuru Traffic Base Commandant Mary Omari who together with her junior traffic police officers arrived at the scene after about half an hour later had a hectic time trying to control traffic and assessing the accident. The commandant told Journalists at the scene later that traffic police officers were still investigating the cause of the accident. “We are still carrying out investigations to establish who was responsible for the accident. We have intervened eye witnesses and assessed the scene but we are still in no position to establish the cause of the accident,’’she said. The driver of the lorry and his conductor were driven off in police van while the bodies of the accident victims were taken to Nakuru County General Hospital mortuary.
