Tullow Oil Company has committed Sh15 million towards water projects in three sub-counties in Kisumu. Kisumu County executive member for water and natural resources Prof Barack Abonyo said this is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility as they survey oil prospects in the county. Abonyo said the water projects will be implemented in Kisumu West, Muhoroni and Nyando sub-counties. "After thorough evaluation of the water projects to be funded by Tullow only the three were considered for support,” he said. He said most of the works will entail expansion of the water supply to reach institutions like schools, hospitals and possibly connect more homes in the rural areas. Speaking when he led a team of Tullow officials to the sites, Abonyo said that over ten water projects requests were advanced to the oil company for consideration but only three were picked. He said that the areas that were picked were greatly affected by lack of adequate and affordable clean water supply to the locals. “Where the water projects are being implemented have suffered an acute shortage of water thus the need to consider such areas," he said. Abonyo said the completion of the water projects will take at least one and a half months since contractors have moved to the ground to commence work. He said Tullow also sponsored some students in secondary schools, colleges and universities under that scheme.
