Bee farmers from Tulwet Village have been urged to embrace modern technology in honey harvesting to increase their profits.
Chelegat Boreto ,the Chair lady of Tulwet Honey Group said that there is need for bee farmers to keep abreast with modern technologies in bee farming to enable farmers enjoy their fruits .
Speaking yesterday at Tulwet Village, Kiptororo Ward , Kuresoi North sub-county in Nakuru County during a free training session to bee farmers , Boreto urged bee farmers to abandon traditional methods of honey harvesting which have several limitations.
“ Traditional honey harvesting methods haves been over taken by time and there is need for bee farmers to adopt modern technologies to reap maximum profits”, said Boreto .
Boreto noted that bee farming has transformed the lives of many residents in the area.
“Bee rearing has improved the lives of many youth and women by providing them with income “, said Boreto .
She added that the rate of crime in the area has reduced following involvement of youth in bee keeping .
“ It's encouraging that most of our youth have shunned traditional practices like cattle rustling and banditry after being involved in the main stream of generating income through bee keeping “, said Boreto .
Boreto however said that the industry is plagued by financial constraints to enable the group embark on large scale of honey production.
“Kiptororo Ward is capable of producing over 10,000 tonnes of honey but its being limited by scarce of capital “, said Boreto .
She called on the Kuresoi North CDF Fund to assist the group meet its financial obligations to help in creating more job opportunities for youth.
