[Photo|Dr William Kingi]Mombasa Deputy Governor Dr William Kingi has launched the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) Students Organization website and e-bursary platform.Kingi was flanked by Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir and the University Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar. The website is an initiative of the students to harness communication and coordination among the students.Kingi was particularly moved by the e-bursary platform which is an innovation by a student of the university. The e-bursary platform offers the students an opportunity to apply and follow up the status of their bursary applications online. "It is an innovation that I believe will go along way in addressing the issue of equity in distribution and access to bursaries even at the county level," said Kingi."ICT stretches the realm of the human mind, expanding our imagination and I'm glad our youth are warming up to ICT as an avenue of empowerment. There are a wide range of opportunities for study and career advancement available online," he added.Kingi indicated young people can take advantage of the world wide interaction platform that such web tools offer to acquire more knowledge through research and sharing.Quite often, he said students venturing into early adulthood make do with little information regarding social vices, communicable diseases and especially issues surrounding their sexuality. "Web resources offer a bridge to a wide range of information on how to deal with these issues. They also offer guidance on the surrounding legal issues. We should endeavour to utilise the opportunity to not only tap into the available info and resources but also contribute more."As a nation, Kingi said Kenyans are living in an age where the tendency is to look inwards and exclude competing views, which is contrary to the spirit of the internet age. "The internet age requires us to engage. We must interact with issues beyond the immediate and we must engage with others. So lets engage," he said on Thursday.
