20 students from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) have benefited from Base Titanium’s trainee programme.

The beneficiaries had gone through a three-year diploma course at the institution.

Base Titanium, in its apprentice programme offers graduates an on-the-job training after which they are either absorbed in the company or allowed to go and hunt opportunities elsewhere.

TUM vice chancellor Laila Abubakar while speaking during the graduation ceremony at Baobab Beach Resort and Spa pointed at lack of technical skills and work experience as the main impediment to getting into employment.

“A lot still need to be done to create innovative ways to provide skills to youth and ensure they are ready for the job market,” Laila said.

She, however, told the graduands to look beyond their prospective employers and create jobs for themselves.

She called on companies to emulate Base Titanium’s graduate model to increase the number of competent graduates in their respective industries.
