Speaking on Saturday at Turbo shopping centre, Busienei said that involving village elders and chiefs in security will curb crime.

He said that chiefs and village elders are the people on the ground and understand the people and activities taking place in their various jurisdictions.

“To address increasing insecurity and come up with effective measures that will provide safety of the people, the government must work with chiefs and village elders,” said the MP.

The legislator accused the government of sidelining village elders who he said were effective during the provincial administration.

“Before devolution came in place our chiefs and village elders had a say on security and we experienced low crime rates but with devolution, their roles have been undermined,” said Busienei.

The MP said for security to be realised, the government will have to pull up it socks by investing more machinery and personnel.

He observed that the number of security officers across the country is still very low a move he said has contributed to increased crime.

The MP also urged the national government to share security intelligence with counties.

Sub-county deputy commissioner Kinyua Wanjau urged locals to embrace Nyumba Kumi and other security measures being implemented by both the national and the county governments.

He said that Nyumba Kumi will help reduce crime rates if locals fully adopt it.

Wanjau said that the sub-county security has lined up forums where residents will be sensitised on how Nyumba Kumi works.
