At least 12 people sustained serious injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a road accident along Nakuru-Nairobi highway near Kiondoo trading centre.
The Saturday evening incident involved a 14-passenger van which was travelling from Gilgil to Nakuru when the accident occurred at around 6pm.
According to Crispin Onyango, an eyewitness, the van was following a lorry ferrying sand, with both of them on high speed when the driver of the lorry decided to turn to the right without indicating hence confusing the van driver.
The matatu driver tried to apply brakes but failed to control it due to the high speed, resulting in the vehicle to overturn several times before landing in a ditch.
“It happened so fast. The two vehicles were on high speed but the lorry’s driver did not indicate when he was turning, that is why the matatu lost control,” said Onyango.
Twelve passengers who were on board the matatu survived with serious injuries and were rushed to various hospitals including Nakuru county hospital, while the driver of the van is critical condition at Rift valley provincial hospital .
Police officers from Lanet police post and loyal citizen assisted the victims.
The driver of the lorry and his conductor escape unhurt.
