Egerton University students now want an active guidance and counseling department to deal with early pregnancies and abortion.

The students claimed many of them end up depressed and distressed if the find out they are pregnant, leading to increased cases of abortion and unwanted pregnancies.

“Many students are increasingly committing suicide or die while attempting abortion yet this can be avoided if they are talked to once they discover they are expectant,” said Ann Njeri Durign, a student.

During the weekend, two fetuses were discovered in the campus. The incident left many of the students in shock. Both bodies were discovered by cleaners at different parts of the institution while they were undertaking their morning duties.

The first body was discovered at Luwenzori male hostels in the institution to Maringo hostels.

“We think that the girl aborted somewhere else and decided to dump it in the male hostel, The female hostel is just adjacent to it,” said Abraham Kiptoo, another student.

He cited that the cleaners raised the alarm after they discovered the body, attracting the attention of the hostel residents. The other, a three months old fetus, was discovered at Hollywood hostels in the area.

“It’s sympathetic. We cannot trace the children back to the owners and yet there are many women wishing that they would get children,” said Mwale Johnston, a second year student in the institution.

He called on peer counselors and anti abortion activists’ to camp in the institution, citing that there were no counselors for women who fell pregnant out of their own will.
