Two businessmen who allegedly obtained a total of Sh3 million from farmers by false pretences have separately been charged with fraud and forgery at a Nakuru court.

John Bii Kiptoo, 37, who appeared before Chief Magistrate Samuel Mungai denied conning Gladys Wagera Sh1million by pretending to be in position to sell her two prime plots at Kiamunyi estate and Ngata area respectively. Both the locations are in the outskirts of Nakuru town.

According to the prosecution, led by Inspector Stephen Wambua, the accused was allegedly accompanied by other men who are still at large, obtained the cash from the victim and presented a forged title deed claiming ownership of the property.

The accused further faced charges of forging a title deed and purporting that it was a genuine document issued by the Nakuru lands registrar’s office. Kiptoo was released on a Sh500,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount.

In the same court, Benard Kipkirui Tanui denied fraudulently obtaining Sh2 million from Rose Chesang claiming to sell her a five-acre-piece of land. The court heard that the accused used trickery to convince Chesang that he was selling a parcel of land at Ngongongeri area in Njoro Sub-county.

The prosecution told the court that the accused also presented a forged title deed claiming that it was a genuine one issued by Nakuru lands registrar. The accused was released on Sh1 million bond and a surety of a similar amount.

Hearing of the two cases was scheduled for November 5.
