Two people were on Monday arraigned in court on charges of assaulting a Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) officer in Kisumu.
The two, Evance Ayange and Charles Ohula who were present in court were charged on three counts of offences of assault and the sale of substandard products.
The accused appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Phylis Shinyada and were charged with assaulting Mr Heltan Mwalukumbi who is an officer with the Kenya Bureau of Standards.
The particulars of the offence were that on March 16 at around 11:45 at Kisumu bus park, the accused assaulted Mr Mwalukumbi who was lawfully exercising his duties as an officer in charge of inspecting products released to the market for consumption by consumers.
They were also charged with sale products to the public without a valid KEBS standardization mark and permit.
As read in the chargers by court, the accused sold 205 pieces of substandard Huasheng, 95 pieces of Guokang portable sockets to the public knowing that they were substandard.
Among them were 210 pieces of Merel immersion water heaters and alcoholic beverages such as coffee spirits, simba Gin and Empire cane spirits.
The accused who pleaded not guilty to the charges prayed through their defense lawyer that they be released on bond and be provided with witness statements and any other documents that the prosecution intends to rely upon.
The accused were released on a cash bail of Sh40,000 each and a bond of Sh100,000 with surety of similar amount.
The case is set for hearing on April 28 and a mention on April 4.
