Two people have been arrested for denying their children a right to education in Nakuru.
The suspects Solomon Orwa and his wife Eunice Akoth were arrested by Nyumba Kumi officials in Lakeview estate on Saturday after a tip off from neigbors.
Area assistant chief George Ng’ang’a confirmed the arrests and said the two have been locking their 4 children in the house for 6 months on grounds that their religion does not allow children go to school.
“The four dropped school last year July after they were instructed to do so by their parents. The parents have been locking them in the house teaching them the bible,” said the chief.
The local administrator condemned the parents for denying the children the right to education.
Ng’ang’a said one of the children was expectd to sit for KCPE this year while others were in class 5, 4, 2 and 1 respectively.
Samuel Obara, Nakuru OCPD said parents who fail to take their children to school will not be spared.
“It is bad to deny children right to education. Such parents should be arrested and prosecuted,” said Obara.
Obara said the children were taken to New Life Children’s Home in Nakuru as the parents will be arraigned in court on Monday.
