The two companies whose identities are not yet out will be based in Likoni and Nyali or Kisauni.

Water, Sanitation and Natural resources Executive Fatma Awale has said Mombasa County will have two desalination plants that will be producing at least 130,000 cubic metres of fresh water in a day.

Ms Awale said the water desalination project will start in June this year, where the bigger plant that will be located at either Kisauni or Nyali, will take up to 15 months to complete while the smaller plant that will be set at Likkoni will have to take between 8-12 months to complete.

"We have awarded tenders to two two companies. They were here last week for negotiations before we start the project in two months. The smaller plant which will be in the South mainland, should be completed in eight to 12 months, while the bigger one will take up to 15 months." said Ms Awale, as quoted by Daily Nation.

Ms Awale said Mombasa County needs more than 180, 000 cubic metres of water in a day but it is only getting half of the amount.
