An accident along Thika Garissa Highway on Tuesday left two students dead before they could arrive to their respective schools on the opening day.
The fatal accident occurred near Kwa Makaa Market a few metres from Kithimani town in Machakos County on Tuesday evening at around 4pm
Confirming the unfortunate accident at the scene, Yatta sub-county Police Boss Kipsang Chagat stated that the accident had left two students dead and 15 others severely injured while 11 had minor injuries.
“The fatal accident involving one of the Chania Shuttles that had mainly students aboard as they were going back to their respective Secondary and Primary Schools. Two so far have been confirmed dead and 15 have been rushed to Matuu Level Four Hospital to receive treatment,” said Chagat.
According to Dennis Mutunga an eye witness, the Chania Bus was hit by a lorry that was coming from the opposite direction while trying to overtake another bus (Earth Plane).
“The accident occurred some minutes past 4pm when the Chania bus tried overtaking the a bus named Earth Plane since it was too late as the lorry which was coming from the other direction was already too close. The bus lost control rolling severally towards the forest,” said Mutunga.
Chagat advised drivers to be extra cautious on roads, especially during the opening days when transporting children to their various schools to avoid loss of lives.
“Kwa Makaa area is a black spot because there has been several accidents on the same spot due to the corner that careless drivers approach without caution,” said Chagat.
The accident victims were rushed to Matuu Level-4 Hospitals for treatment while the deceased bodies were taken to Matuu Nursing Home Mortuary.
The driver of the bus was arrested and remanded in Kithimani Police Station.
