A search and rescue mission at the site of the 10-storey building under construction which collapsed in Kisii County on Thursday is underway.

A statement from the Office of the Government Spokesman said two people died while 31 sustained injuries.

The injured, the statement added, are undergoing treatment at Kisii Level 5 Hospital while the dead were transferred to Kisii mortuary.

The national government, county government, police and the Kenya Red Cross have responded urgently to the tragic accident.

“Search and rescue operations are underway and have received extensive support from locals residing in the area. Currently, the number of people who were within the building at the time of the collapse cannot be verified. However, a large number of them are assumed to be construction workers,” the statement stated.

The proprietor and the architect are also believed to have been in the building, although this has not been confirmed.

“Our deepest condolences go to the families of the two individuals who have lost their lives. We understand the deep concern of families and members of the public following this grievous event.”

The public and media have been asked to be patient even as the rescue and recovery exercise is underway.
