Two drivers met their death last night at Juja stage after their speeding trucks were involved in an accident when they tried overtaking each other.
The lorries, which were coming from Nairobi to Murang’a, were speeding on the Thika superhighway and tried overtaking each other several times on the way, according to witnesses.
“The two were behaving in a childish manner on their way up to the accident scene,” said Dennis Dibondo, a witness.
“They seem not aware of the road rules and regulations.”
They got involved in the accident when one tried to overtake the other and a fast moving PSV vehicle obstructed it, only for lorry to block the other one, leading to both vehicles falling on the highway.
Confirming the incident, Thika traffic police commander Francis Muthamia, who arrived at the scene a few minutes after the accident, said that the two drivers died on the spot and their co-drivers escaped with injuries.
He said the injured co-drivers will be interrogated to help police with investigations.
The commander condemned drivers who like to speed and warned anyone causing disruptions on the roads in the sub-county that they will face the arm of the law.
“We have issued warning more than enough times and it’s time to take action now. We are not going to hesitate arresting anyone not abiding with the road rules and regulations,” cautioned Muthamia.
A crackdown on the unroadworthy vehicles was to commence this week but it was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances, according to the officer.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Thika General Kago mortuary.
