(Photo/Standard)Two girls from Bulesa in Isiolo county drowned in the Ewaso Nyiro River when they tried to swim.The girls, aged 10 and 8, had gone to fetch firewood from a nearby bush when they decided to swim.Merti Deputy county commissioner Julius Maiyo confirmed the incident and said the girls' bodies were retrieved from the river and buried on Thursday according to the Islamic culture.Maiyo urged parents to be more alert not to allow their children to swim in the river that has burst its banks due to the ongoing rains in the region."I urge parents not to send children to places near the river since they may attempt to swim. Places near the river should be kept off during this rainy season," said the commissioner.Isiolo county has been receiving heavy rains in the past few days.
