Football hooliganism was on display on Sunday morning after cracking game in the National Super League between hosts Borabu Chiefs and their perennial rivals Maseno United.
The home side, Borabu Chiefs, was looking for the fourth consecutive victory in their bid to get automatic promotion but their plans were abandoned after a controversial penalty in favor of the visitors after one hour of play.
Angry fans started throwing blunt objects to the field after Alfred Onyango had converted the penalty in Kipkebe Green Stadium with centre referee Mike Oruri and his assistants running for refuge before the police from Chepilat police post intervened.
“The assault was directed towards Maseno United players and the referees," said Peter Orina, a Borabu Chiefs supporter.
"The efforts were thwarted by the police and the battles turned to be chaotic following the intervention. We have seen two critically injured and have been rushed to Tenwek.”
Maseno United coach Peter Oloo condemned the chaos with Borabu side remaining mum about the unfortunate incident.
“This is totally unacceptable and officials must do something to curb such incidents in future. Many of these cases at lower levels remain unreported but time has come for us to say no,” he said.
According to Chepilat GSU camp, they apprehended 10 fans who are suspected to have incited the crowd and are detained waiting to be subjected to court process on Monday.
“At least 10 fans have been arrested and they will be arraigned in court to answer to charges of interrupting a peaceful game. Those who were injured could be through the stones that were directed to the police or match officials and not bullets as people are claiming,” said constable George Mukhwana.
