It isn't news to any Kenyan that Luos and Kikuyus have antagonized politically since independence.
However, in spite of the political rivalry between the two communities, the Luos have shown love for President Uhuru Kenyatta twice.1. When they gathered in thousands to receive him in KisumuEarly last year, President Uhuru Kenyatta received an unexpected welcome in Kisumu when he toured the area to seek support for his second term as president. He also attended a cultural event that was meant to bring leaders together. Thousands of residents showed him love by lining up along the road from the airport to Kisumu State Lodge just to greet him. All Uhuru said was; " It does not matter whether you are a Kamba, a Luo, Kikuyu or any other tribe, what is important is that we are all Kenyans.”This was different from other times when they threw stones and shoes at him asking him to leave.2. When he launched the KBL Senator Beer factory in KisumuPresident Uhuru Kenyatta played wisely when he launched the Senator Beer plant in Kisumu. He charmed Kisumu residents with his announcement that the project would create 110, 000 jobs. His visit also augured well for millet, sorghum and cassava farmers who would benefit immensely once the plant was completed. The president said increased demand for sorghum will see the number of contracted farmers rise from 30,000 to 45,000 with their gross earnings expected to reach Sh6 billion annually in the next few years. To crown it all, Uhuru shook hands with his long-time nemesis Raila Odinga, a move that won him praise across Luo land for the historic handshake.
