Amani National Congress (ANC) candidate for Kakamega Senate seat Cleophas Malala and Mumias Central Ward contestant, Charles Odanga, were attacked by armed youth in Mumias West Constituency, Sunday.
The two were attacked when they were speaking to youth after attending a church service in Matara area.
Odanga was hurt during the attack and was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital in Mumias town where he received treatment and was discharged.
According to Malala, the youth they were addressing suddenly turned chaotic and confronted them.
“We thought that the youth blocked the road demanding that we address them. However, when we started addressing them, they turned violent and attacked us with stones and all forms of crude weapons,” Malala said.
Reports however indicate the two politicians had condemned the local leadership before the youth turned fierce.
The windscreens of the duo were smashed during the incident.
Malala condemned the incident and asked the youth to refuse being used to cause violence.
"We want to tell the youth to stay away from people who want use them to cause chaos. This is an electioneering period and we should be accommodative of the views of others," he said.
