Two Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldiers were on Wednesday shot dead and five others injured by Administration Police (AP) officers in Mandera.
The officer in charge of the Rural Border Patrol Unit in Kitui County, Mr Nguyo Wambua, confirmed the incident adding that the KDF soldiers were on patrol when they encountered the Administration Policemen.
According to Wambua, the KDF soldiers opened fire on the police officers after they mistook them for Al Shabaab terrorists forcing the APs to fire back leading to the death of the military men.
“My officers fatally shot the two soldiers and injured several others while returning fire after coming under attack from the KDF men who mistook them for armed bandits.
“We cannot understand how the KDF officers mistook our team for armed bandits because they were in a known camp complete with government vehicles which could be identified,” Wambua was quoted by The Nation.
The bodies of the soldiers and the injured military men were airlifted to Nairobi to a city morgue and hospital respectively.
