Policemen from the Nairobi county government on Monday arrested two youths along the Karanja Gatwekira road for selling pirated music compact discs.
The two were arrested after a tip-off from a sales agent attached to a local Kenyan secular artist. They were arrested as they marketed the CDs to pedestrians and drivers.
The two are set to be arraigned in court to answer piracy charges. The arrests come at a time when the Copyright Society of Kenya has raised serious concerns on rising cases of piracy in Kenya, a fact that has caused huge losses to music artists.
In 2015, statistics of the Copyright Society of Kenya indicated that over five million copies of pirated CDs were on sale in the streets of Nairobi and other major towns in the country causing an annual loss of up to $47 million to the genuine owners.
In Kenya, music piracy is punishable by law and anyone found engaging in the vice shall be fined an amount not exceeding sh300, 000 or a three-year jail term or both.
