Two people died on the spot on Sunday night during an accident at Murengeti on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway in Kiambu county.
The car was heading towards Nairobi from Nakuru while the Matunda bus was headed for Western Kenya.
Lari acting police boss Dorothy Nahashon said the car driver, Silvester Avani, lost control and swerved to the other lane. The car hit the bus, killing him and a passenger, Tom Kayesa.
The bus rolled into a ditch about 500 metres from the highway, injuring passengers and damaging luggage.
“The bus driver tried to avoid the accident, but it was too late,” Nahashon said.
She said two passengers in the car were taken to the AIC Kijabe Hospital. Witnesses said the bus passengers called for help.
“We heard braking sounds and a loud bang. We saw the headlights switching off and the bus rolling,” Bethuel Mwaura said.
Mwaura, a bodaboda rider, said they helped the passengers out of the bus.
“Within a short time, police arrived and joined the residents in rescuing the victims and rushing them to hospitals,” he said.
Speaking in her office at Lari police station, Nahashon urged motorists to drive at a moderate speed so they can control their vehicles. She warned motorists operating at night to be careful as the roads are covered in fog.
The bodies were taken to Chiromo mortuary in Nairobi as the wreckage of the vehicles were towed to Lari police station.
