Police in Manga sub County of Nyamira County are investigating a scenario where two minors remanded in Manga juvenile prison are alleged to have escaped the well guarded institution yesterday morning at around 1.30am.
According to Manga OCPD James Musyimi Mundwa, the institution has of late been a casualty of inmates making daring and successful escapes where only this year there has been three cases.
The juveniles who were being held for murder and theft aged 17 and 14 years are said to have climbed the perimeter wall of the institution at around midnight of 7th June where they escaped from the institution and there has not been any trace yet.
“The 17 year old boy was facing murder charges and the other 14, theft charges escaped at 1.30 am and efforts of tracing them have not been successful yet,” said Mundwa.
Mundwa however said that the custodians who are welfare officers could be investigated over the incident to establish whether they have a hand in the three incidents that have happened this year.
He said that only last month two juveniles escaped and another one case in March.
“This is the third time this year minors are escaping from the legal custody under unclear circumstances. Last month two other minors escaped from this children remand home while in March one also escaped,” said the OCPD
He said his office is investigating the custodians had a hand in the last night’s incident and the other two or whether there wasn’t sufficient security surveillance at the institution.
