Two persons have been confirmed dead as a result of cholera in Mombasa County. According to The Star, the deceased were among four people who had been hospitalized after testing positive for the symptoms of the deadly disease.

The two, who hailed from Maka area in Likoni had tested positive while another duo from Vijiweni village, tested negative.

Mombasa chief health officer Hadija Shikely through County communications director Richard Chacha said that seventeen cases of the persons affected by the diseases had been reported in the region.

He also said that the county government has embarked on the crackdown of all unlicensed food joints across the county.

Chacha also asked the residents to maintain high standards of hygiene in the fight to curb the disease.

“There are health barazas aimed at sensitising people on how to protect themselves," Chacha added.

Different hotels and eateries that have been operating without health clearance risk closure after the Governor Ali Joho’s leadership on Wednesday started a crackdown on the eateries.

Businessmen in the county have, however, accused the county officials of favoritism during the crackdown.

Some of the businessmen claimed that the government has been forced to close down despite having met the necessary requirements to operate in the county.

They have also accused the county officials of soliciting for bribes during the operation.  Chacha has, however, dismissed the claims of bribery.
